We are looking to collaborate with academic researchers in the Asia-Pacific region to develop mutant mice for life science research. In this proposed collaboration, the CDB will be responsible for generating the mutant mice, and your role will be to identify genes of interest and characterize the mutant phenotype. We ask that you share part of the costs involved for generating the mutant mice:
1) Generating mutant mice by homologous recombination in ES cells: 1,500,000 yen
We will generate mutant mice starting from the construction of the targeting vector. There is an extra charge of 500,000 yen if you would like us to generate the mutant in a C57BL/6N background.
In principle, the mutant mice will be sent as frozen embryos. This is to minimize the risk of the microbiological contamination and to make the mouse shipment easy. However, if you do not have a technician who is capable of properly thawing the zygotes and transplanting them into foster mothers to produce pups, we will send you live F1 heterozygotes with an extra charge of 200,000 yen. In addition, we have encountered problems in the past with some companies regarding the handling of live mice, and shipping of live mice will be handled by World Courier; you must cover the cost of the shipment.
2) Generating transgenic mice by DNA injection into zygotes: 100,000 yen
Two hundred frozen zygotes injected with DNA will be sent to your lab. You must have a technician who is capable of properly thawing the zygotes and transplanting them into foster mothers to produce pups; we cannot send you live transgenic mice.
In addition:
1) You must receive the mutant mice according to the CDB's microbiological standards (http://www.cdb.riken.jp/arg/policy_en.html).
2) We, the CDB, will be included as coauthors in the first major relevant publication using the mutant mice. You must present us with the draft of your paper before its submission and receive our consent prior to publication.
3) In any publications reporting use of the mutant mice, we ask that the mutant mice be described with the Accession Number (Acc. No.) assigned by the CDB and its website (KO; http://www.cdb.riken.jp/arg/mutant%20mice%20list.html,TG; http://www.cdb.riken.jp/arg/TG%20mutant%20mice%20list.html).
4) After publication of the first relevant paper using the mutant mice, the mice line will be deposited at the RIKEN BioResource Center (BRC). The mice will be distributed to researchers around the world upon request under the conditions you agree. In any publications reporting use of the mutant mice by third parties we also ask that the first relevant publication be cited, and the mutant mice be described with the Accession Number (Acc. No.) and its website (KO; http://www.cdb.riken.jp/arg/mutant%20mice%20list.html,TG; http://www.cdb.riken.jp/arg/TG%20mutant%20mice%20list.html).
