July 27, 2005 – The RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology (Kobe, Japan) and the GSF National Research Center for Environment and Health (Neuherberg, Germany) finalized a memorandum of understanding for scientific collaboration this month, marking the sixth such international affiliation formally established by the CDB.

The GSF focuses its research on human health and the environment, with the aimsof identifying health risks posed by environmental factors, elucidating the mechanisms of disease development, and developing new concepts for the protection of human health. The institute is funded by the German federal Ministry of Education and Research and the state of Bavaria, and has a staff of approximately 1,600.

The new affiliation will further strengthen CDB’s ties with the research community in western Europe, particularly in the fields of stem cells and regenerative medicine. The terms of the collaboration agreement now make it easier for scientists at both centers to visit their counterparts and host guests from the affiliated institution, which promises to facilitate CDB-GSF collaboration and the exchange of information across borders.
