Speaker Profile

Stefano Piccolo

Stefano Piccolo is Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Padua School of Medicine. As a Postdoctoral Fellow with Eddy De Robertis at HHMI-UCLA, he unveiled how extracellular antagonism to growth factors is a key mechanism by which neural tissues are induced by the Spemann organizer.

Dr. Piccolo's current interest is looking at how cells integrate distinct extracellular signals to regulate cell fate in a quantitative, qualitative and combinatorial fashion. Research from his group has contributed significantly to our understanding of TGF-βsignal transduction. He has recently contributed to general mechanisms governing tumor cell growth and metastasis.
