Shigeru Kondo

Shigeru Kondo is a Professor of the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences, Osaka University, where he heads the Laboratory of Pattern Formation. His group is interested in how patterns are formed in animals based on mathematical models, in particular using the Turing, or reaction-diffusion (RD), model. They hope to use the mathematical models as predictive tools to aid in the identification of genes and molecules involved generating spatial structures.

He received his Ph.D. from Kyoto University in 1988. He worked for a few years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Basel University Bio Center under Dr. Walter Gehring before returning to Kyoto University in 1994 as an assistant professor. He later moved to the Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences, the University of Tokushima in 1997 as a professor. In 2001, he was appointed a team leader at the RIKEN CDB where he remained until taking up the position as professor at Nagoya University. He moved to Osaka University in 2009.
