Chun Wai majored in biology and received his MPhil degree in Biology at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, studying retinal cell fate determination in mouse. He became interested in how developmental processes evolve and pursued a PhD degree in the University of Chicago, where he studied how the shapes of morphogen gradients change during evolution and its impact on cell type specification, using extraembryonic tissues of flies as model. After receiving his PhD degree, he decided to focus more on cell shape change and joined the Wang lab to study how patterning of amnioserosa lead to columnar-to-squamous epithelial transformation. This may provide insight into how cell fate specification is linked to morphological change in cell shape.
