H. Frederik Nijhout

Fred Nijhout received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1974 and has been a professor at Duke University since 1977. Fred is a developmental physiologist with a special interest in elucidating the higher-level mechanisms by which insects regulate the timing of critical developmental processes such as molting, metamorphosis. He also work on understanding the mechanisms that control how insects grow to their species-specific body size and how appendages are controlled to grow in correct proportion to the body when body size varies plastically. Many of these processes involve the higher-level regulation of the secretion of developmental hormones and growth factors and cell-level regulation of their response pathways.
