Brief Bio Dominique Bergmann is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at Stanford University, an Adjunct staff member of the Carnegie Institution, Department of Plant Biology and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Investigator. She was the recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award from the US National Institutes of Health and the Charles A. Shull award from the American Society of Plant Biologists. She began her Developmental Biology career studying axis formation in C. elegans, but grew interested in how flexibility and environmental responsiveness could be incorporated into developmental trajectories. Such flexibility is found (often in dramatic form) during plant development. Her group now uses the stomatal lineage in the leaf epidermis as a conceptual and technical framework for the study of cell fate, cell polarity and stem-cell behaviors.
